Getting Kids In India Online

(Every month I want to feature some inspiring words from one of my students. If you are interested in submitting something, then please do! This post is from Belinda. Watch the video at the bottom.)

"Each week I volunteer for an Education project in India. Using skype, I help kids in a village with their English. Being in touch with them is highly rewarding. We laugh a lot.

This idea was the brainchild of Professor Sugata Mitra, who inspired Slumdog Millionaire with his “Hole in the wall” experiments. He has demonstrated that, in the absence of supervision or formal teaching, children can teach themselves and each other, if they're motivated by curiosity and peer interest. He now hopes to find an inexpensive way to provide free access to the internet for children. His work gets children online in geographically and economically remote areas by fixing a computer into a wall. As the computers are in a public place the kids are less likely to seek out unfit material and each computer gives up to 300 children access to the wonders of the web. He wishes to design, construct and test a new cheaper web on the wall. Which is where you could help …"
